Turning the Tide: Policy Paper Embedding Loss and Damage in the next generation of NDCS

A policy paper by Illari Aragon, Richard Ewbank, and colleagues from CAID’s partner organization ICCCAD provide analysis and key recommendations for incorporating loss and damage into the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The paper also highlights the work of CAID partner CANLA and its flagship project, the NDC Observatory.

What's at stake?

The upcoming round of NDCs presents a pivotal moment in global climate action, as countries are set to update and submit their revised plans by February 2025. Traditionally, NDCs have focused on mitigation (efforts to reduce emissions) and adaptation (strategies to cope with climate impacts). However, there is an increasing push for governments to also address loss and damage in these climate plans.

Including loss and damage considerations in revised NDCs will offer a more comprehensive view of the climate impacts that countries have already endured. It could also help to mobilize the necessary support and promote climate justice for the most vulnerable communities.

This policy paper advocates for the integration of loss and damage into revised NDCs and provides specific recommendations to facilitate this integration.
